A nation mourned for its leader and many distant parts of the world like Vietnam and Kerala joined in the grief. Across the length of the country, entire towns and villages stood for hours at roadsides for a glimpse of Fidel Castro’s ashes in the “Caravan of Freedom”
“The leader of the revolution rejected any manifestation of a cult of personality,” President and brother of Castro, Raúl Castro told a huge crowd gathered in the eastern city of Santiago, “and was consistent in that through the last hours of his life, insisting that, once dead, his name and likeness would never be used on institutions, streets, parks or other public sites, and that busts, statues or other forms of tribute would never be erected.”
