U.P: BJP MLA Sangeet Som booked for showing anti-muslim documentary

The election code is in force in Uttar Pradesh which goes to polls from February 11th till March. But this did not stop the ruling BJP party MLA and his supporters from screening a highly controversial documentary which shows Hindus as saviors to his voters, thus polarizing them and instigating communal violence.

On Tuesday night, police seized a pen drive and a vehicle from his supporter and a driver in Alamgir Faridpur village. Police charged them under section 188 of the IPC and booked Som under the People’s Representation Act.They were accused of screening the documentary glorifying Som in his constituency, Sardhana, without seeking the nod of the Election Commission.

The documentary allegedly showed Som’s role in the Bisada and Kanth incidents, and his arrest from Salawa village after the Muzaffarnagar riots, thereby projecting him as the saviour of the Hindus. A team of officials examined the contents of the 20-minute documentary and found it unfit for screening.

This time it was the villagers who informed the police about the screening of this highly controversial/unfit documentary.

Who is Sangeet Som?

A first time BJP MLA in Sardhana, U.P, he is another person who is conferred the title, ‘Hindu Hriday Samrat.’ He is one of the accused in the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots and was booked under the National Security Act on 24 September 2013. Justice Vishnu Sahai Commission’s report on Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013 has put him on top of the list of those found responsible for the riots.

Known as an anti-beef campaigner, documentary evidence revealed that Sangeet Som is personally associated with two meat processing and export companies, Al-Dua and Al-Anam which are the leading companies supplying halal meat to Arab countries!

The fact that he continues to enjoy his party’s support tell us a lot about both.
