“Freedom of expression is for all,” the Madras High Court said on Friday and categorically dismissed a petition seeking that the Tamil movie “Mersal” be banned.

Advocate A. Ashvathaman had filed a petition before the court seeking the revocation of certification on the ground that it depicted India and its medical system in a very poor light.

“Those who do not like it need not watch it.”

Made by young and dynamic director,Atlee and starring popular actor Vijay in a triple role, Mersal has been a hit at the box office. The Bharatiya Janata Party has strongly objected to sequences that were critical of GST, Digital India and demonetisation. The film has also had some opposition from doctors in Tamil Nadu who have protested against the negative light in which the medical profession has been depicted in the film.

The film has been doing extremely well at the box office and all major figures in the Tamil film industry including Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan have beeen vocal in lending support to the film and standing by it to defy threats of disruption.

Justice MM Sundresh and Justice M Sundar said that Mersal is fiction and not real life, and those who do not like it need not watch it.”
