Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of Babasaheb Ambedkar and leader of the Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh, claimed that a Maharashtra minister in the Fadnavis cabinet told him that the Prime Minister’s Office had given specific orders to not arrest Sambhaji Bhide and Milind Ekbote, the two Hindutva leaders who are accused of inciting violence in Bhima Koregaon near Pune on January 1.

The unrest began during the 200th anniversary celebrations of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon when the Hindutva leaders threw stones against the Dalits, which led to widespread violence, in which a Dalit was killed and many injured. The police filed cases against 85-year-old Sambhaji Bhide, who leads the organisation Shiv Pratishthan, and Milind Ekbote, who heads the radical Hindu outfit Samasta Hindu Aghadi but the two have not been arrested yet.

Ambedkar questions Modis strategic silence

The violence in Pune spread to Mumbai and all the cities and towns and Dalits came out in large numbers to protest the injustice.

“I don’t understand the silence of the government in the case, even days after the FIR was filed,” The government has not even condemned those behind the violence…why is the government trying to protect people who tried to divide two communities?” was the main question posed by Prakash Ambedkar.
