Vijay Mallya seems to have become the role model for the Indian billionaires who have cheated the public sector banks and managed to escape from the country.

The latest news from Financial Times is that diamond merchants Mehul Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi who have duped the Punjab National Bank of Rs. 13,000 crores have sought political asylum in United Kingdom.

CBI seeks Interpol red notice against the 2 fraudsters

The buzz is that the two jewel merchants entered U.K by end of January and have asked for political asylum. They have also been in touch with the English law firms which have argued for Mallya successfully so far and citing the condition of Indian jails and human rights violations as the reasons for refusing extradition.

India’s junior minister for home, Kiren Rijiju, is learnt to have asked for the “smooth and early” extradition during his meeting on Monday with Baroness Williams, UK minister of state for countering terrorism.

But before anything the Interpol has to declare him an offender and the process is still going on. These highly influential fraudsters who have cheated their countrymen of crores of rupees, remained very close to ruling class can also manipulate the law and still escape. Mallya looks like an amateur compared to this veteran Choksi as the latter is not even mentioned by name back in India.
