The Supreme court directed Tamil Nadu government to maintain water level of Mullaperiyar dam at 139 feet only till August 31st.

After hearing the dispute between the governments of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the Supreme court joint bench of judges, Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud directed the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that the water level is maintained at 139 feet. The maximum permissible height is 142 feet.
The decision to lower the water limit in the dam was taken in view of the deluge in Kerala, the Supreme Court said. Further hearing on the matter was fixed as September 6 and the bench has directed the 3 governments of Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments to file their responses.
The SC however refused to deal with the dispute between the 2 governments on Mullaperiyar dam as the reason for Kerala floods. It stated that it will only deal with disaster management. On Thursday, the Kerala government submitted to the Supreme Court that the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to suddenly release water from the Mullaperiyar dam was one of the reasons for the devastating floods in the state.
