The BJP’s defeat in the recent Assembly elections by Congress party in 3 states and its rout in Telangana and Mizoram by regional parties has forced some introspection in the party, finally. One of the BJP ministers who has been vocal in criticising his party’s policies has been Nitin Gadkari, the Union Transport minister.
After saying that his party leadership should own up to the defeat he was quoted out of context. “If I am the party president, and my MPs and MLAs are not doing well, then who is responsible? I am,” said Gadkari pointedly at the 31st Intelligence Bureau endowment lecture in New Delhi.
Addressing the centenary endowment lecture on 24.12.2018, he seemed to point out Amit Shah as the cause for the defeat. He also said that “tolerance is the biggest asset” of the country and that he liked Jawaharlal Nehru’s speeches including the one- “India is not a nation but a population.”
