Supreme court dismisses petition questioning Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship

The Supreme court on Thursday, 9.5.2019 categorically dismissed the petition to debar Rahul Gandhi from contesting in two constituencies stating that he was a British citizen. It stated “If some company in some form mentions his nationality as British, does he become a British citizen?”

The petitioners  were Jai Bhagwan Goyal and Chander Prakash Tyagi  who alleged  that Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen, based on a form along with the annual data of a UK-based company in 2005-06.

This decision by the top court  puts to rest the complaint was from BJP parliamentarian Subramanian Swamy, who has for years been accusing the Congress president of lying about his nationality.
