The BJP and its ideological parties have been testing waters in non-Hindi speaking states of South India. A draft education policy , prepared by the former ISRO head, Kasturirangam and co. was presented to the HRD minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal and Minister of State Sanjay Shamrao Dhotre, in New Delhi on 31.5.2019. The policy emphasized on the learning of Hindi in non- Hindi speaking states.
Immediately leaders from many political parties, esp. in Tamil Nadu protested on the as imposition of Hindi and threatened a “language war.” The DMK, AIADMKand Kamal Haasan’s party all joined together as one to oppose the new move.
Centre backtracks- denies imposition
The Centre immediately backtracked to say that there was no such imposition of Hindi at all. The HRD minister said, “Public feedback will be sought, it is a misunderstanding that it has become a policy. No language will be imposed on any state.”
