While the suspense over who would be the speaker of the newly constituted Lok Sabha is still continuing, there seems to be some clarity over who the deputy speaker would be. If sources are to be believed, it would be Odisha’s Bhartrihari Mehtab.
The NDA constituents have decided that Mehtab, son of former Odisha CM Harekrishna Mehtab, would be the best bet for the deputy speaker. Interestingly, Mehtab does not belong to the BJP and not even to an NDA constituency. He belongs to Navin Patnaik’s BJD.
But, even during the last time, the NDA gave the deputy speaker’s post to AIADMK. Jayalalithaa’s trusted lieutenant Thambidurai was the deputy speaker for five years, though the AIADMK was not part of the NDA. Sources say they the same trend could continue this time too. Mehtab is a seasoned parliamentarian and experienced in legislative affairs.
