The story of Gautamiputra Satakarni is about the unsung ruler from the Satavahana dynasty. Satakarni sets a target to bring all the rajyas under one rule and form them as united country. How Satakarni, who ruled Deccan region primarily, manages to build an Akhanda Bharat? How he saves the country from external forces? What is Satakarni’s aim? to know the answers watch the film on big screen.
There is no doubt that it’s Bala Krishna’s show all the way and he is best suited for Satakarni role. His performance is superlative and this is one of the his finest performances of his career. Balayya Babu manages to exude royalty and his dialogue delivery added more value to the film. He did all the bottle sequences without a dupe and it is an ultimate. Shriya Saran is beautiful and she excels in all the emotional scenes. Bollywood’s dream girl Hema Malini as Gouthami Balasri gave her best. Kannada superstar Shivaraj Kumar did a cameo. Others including Tanikella Bharani are adequate.
Chirantan Bhat’s music, though quite good, has failed to bring out the battle mood. Sai Madhav Burra’s dialogues are extradinory and they managed to bring a rare dignity to the movie Camera work is mind blowing and the war sequences before the interval and some shots during the climax have been executed brilliantly. Editing is sleek.
On flip side, Krish’s trade mark emotions and dramatic content is missing in the battle scenes. Krish fails to get the emotions right in this film and this might be because there is not much story to tell. Bala Krishna’s make-up is not good in some scenes. Krish also failed to establish who Satakarni actually was. Certain war sequences have been dragged out and the climax is also not good which might leave you a bit unhappy.
Overall, both Krish and Bala Krishna have succeeded in bringing out the life and greatness of Satakarni. Had Krish concentrated more on story, the output could have been far better. Satakarni is truly a few notches above regular movies. This movie deserves a watch as it is about an unsung Telugu emperor.
